The Floss, pt. 2

My very first blog post was about the dance craze, the Floss. My opening line was horribly incorrect, so let this serve as my retraction: last September, I wrote that the dance was about a year past its viral phase. I was wrong. It was only the beginning.

It’s hard to describe how pervasive the Floss is now. It has become a part of our students’ bodies. They do it so much they don’t even realize they’re doing it--an idle tick, ingrained like biting your nails or twirling your hair. It is bigger than I ever imagined, so big, that the teachers did the unimaginable--performed it.

I’m sure that your children have informed you that at the end of this year’s talent show, the teachers did a dance. Perhaps you caught a clip of it on our Instagram. Perhaps you were one of the lucky witnesses. Our performance featured other viral dances such as the Apache dance (a la “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”), the Twist, The Superman (circa 2006), The Whip and Nae Nae (possibly the most ridiculous name of a dance), and the finale: the Floss.

The kids Lost. Their. Minds, getting louder and more psyched with each shift into a new dance. The noise was deafening. And then, when we broke out in the Floss. They were so excited they jumped up and started doing it with us. After all, isn’t our embarrassment their lifeblood?

This is my last post for the year. I will dearly miss observing and writing about your students, but I’ll be back!
