Bad Libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities. - R. David Lankes
This school year marks the debut of two clubs of students helping in our library. The first meetings and training have just taken place. The student volunteers began by signing an agreement committing to help in the library at least one recess per month (Monday for the grade 5-8 club, Thursday for the grade 4 club). The next order of business was agreeing on a name for each club. After brainstorming lots of great ideas, the 4th grade chose "Junior Librarians". Not to be outdone, grades 5-8 have named themselves "Senior Junior Sort of Librarians".
Club members will be checking books in and out, shelving books, tidying and organizing shelves, covering and repairing books, and doing special projects as needed. The seventh graders are already starting on their first project: adding book levels to the 7th and 8th grade classroom collections for our AR360 program. Accelerated Reader 360 is an online reading practice program that uses research based goal setting tools to awaken a love of reading and encourages students to take active ownership in their learning. We are very excited to roll the program out to the school.
Our newest service clubs, bringing their talents to the library, will help engage and connect more students to our wonderful library. The club member efforts are a huge help for our school and another way for them to enjoy books and our library.
