School Families and Home!

Merriam-Webster defines home as “one’s place of residence” or “the social unit formed by a family living together” (MW 2019). A short post on Urban Dictionary online interpreted home as “when I can be me and feel loved” (UD 2010). What is home to you? What is home to the students, the teachers and staff? As we get settled into our new, and old, routines for the school year, we can reflect on what home is as a Corpus Christi community.

All of us create a community, where we bring our individual creative minds, ready to learn together and from one another. As a family unit, we support and challenge each other, share common experiences, and embrace our differences that make us stronger. Like any other home, we can stumble and have disagreements; conflicts. But as a family, we evolve together, our rituals deepen with our values intact. Our Corpus Christi community was created to provide a nurturing, respectful, safe, and diverse home where we all feel important, needed, and most of all, loved.

Our student co-writer this month shared an important experience being part of the Corpus Christi community; our school families. A school family consists of at least one student from each grade, where we share common values and experiences that make our Corpus Christi home richer.

Sophia shares, “we recently had our first school families get together! They were amazing, all classes were so excited to meet all of the people in their school families! These school families gave the eighth graders a chance to step up with all their courage and talk to the members of their families. As the head of our school families, the eighth graders made us feel at home and safe because we talk together as if we are one. So on behalf of the blog and the rest of the students, we would like to thank the eighth graders for leading us through the fantastic school families; and for all the students for their participation and for not complaining during school families!”
