Class Meetings - how 6th grade solves issues.

6th Grade Class Meetings

By: Charlotte B. and Sadie A.

Every Wednesday in the 6th grade classroom, we all move our chairs into a circle and have a class meeting. During our class meetings, we talk about problems or events that occur in our class. For example, four square, at recess gets a competitive and some people were getting frustrated with the game. We have an agenda notebook that we leave on the back counter for anyone to write a problem in, it can be known or anonymous. When four square was added to the agenda, we agreed to talk about it and try to solve the issues.

Our meetings start with compliments and appreciations to start with positive energy while we pass the ball around. The ball is a small wiffle ball and whoever has the ball is the one person talking. After compliments and appreciations, we look at the agenda and talk about the problems. We will pass the ball around so that everyone’s opinion is heard. We end our meetings with problem solving/solutions for our problems.  If you want the ball, you can raise your hand and wait for the it to be passed to you.

Some of our classmates think that class meetings are fun and it is nice to learn about what is going on in our class from someone else’s view.  They say, “I like them because we don't have any work, but at the same time it is a waste of time because the solution doesn’t always stick.” Our class meetings are important to have so that we don't have a lot problems, or if we do they get solved without a lot of drama. Ms. Gotch thinks, “class meetings are important, so that we learn how to communicate and solve problems without just having a big fight about it.”
