Spelling Practice for Grade 2

Directions: Each week you will bring home the list of spelling words. I will assign two activities each week to help you practice and memorize the spelling words. Use you own paper and staple your work to the rest of your homework.

1. Write a letter Get some good paper and write a letter to someone in your class or to a friend or relative. Think of something funny or interesting to write using all of the spelling words.

2. Typewriter Spelling Type your words on a typewriter or computer. Maybe use some fun fonts and colors.

3. Do you know my meaning? Write a sentence for each of your spelling words. You can use more than one spelling words in a sentence. Be sure your sentence clearly shows the meaning of the spelling word. Underline you spelling words.

4. Picture words Use old magazines and newspapers. Try to find a picture for each of the spelling words. Cut and glue the picture on your paper. Write the spelling word under the picture. Write the words you could not find at the bottom.

5. Rainbow words Use markers or crayons. Write a word with your favorite color. Then trace over the word with a second color. Trace over the word on more time with a third color. So this with each of the spelling words.

6. Backtracing Ask a partner to work with you. Look at your spelling words. With your finger, write the word on your partner’s back. See if they can guess the word you wrote. Do this with each spelling word. Then, have your partner write the words on your back. Did you guess the words that they wrote? Write a note on your homework that says you did this activity.

7. Tongue Twisters Write a sentence for each word where almost all of the words start with the same letter as the spelling word. Underline the spelling word.
Example: Tim took the trip to Tahiti.

8. ABC Order List your spelling words in alphabetical order by the first, second, and third letter.
Example: Ball comes before bar, but batter comes after ball and bar.

9. Spelling Story Write a real or make-believe story using all or almost all of your spelling words. Underline each spelling word.

10. Circles and Boxes Write each spelling word bu leave space between the letters of the word. Use a blue and red marker or crayon. With the blue circle the vowels and with the red draw a box around the consonants.

11. Shortest to Longest Find the shortest word. Write it first, then the next shortest until you come to the last spelling word. This last word will be the longest of all your spelling words. Write the number of letters each word has after it.

12. What is my meaning? Write each spelling word. Write what each word means. Remember, some words have more than one meaning. You do not need to use a complete sentence.
Example: Orange- a fruit; a color

13. Long vowel Words Some words have vowels that say the letter name. Make two headings that look like this:
With a long vowel With a short vowel
Cake Cat

14. How many syllables? All words have syllables. Clap as you say each word and hear the different parts or syllables of the word. Now make three headings like this:
One Syllable Two Syllables Three Syllables

15. Glitter Words Write each word then go over the letters with glue. Sprinkle glitter over the glue. If you don’t have glitter try something else like sand!

Have Fun!
